Fresh details have emerged about Muthoni Nduthu, a Kenyan nurse who tragically lost her life just days before she was set to celebrate Christmas with her family in the United States.
Muthoni, 52, was working her final shift at the Bristol Health and Rehab Center in Pennsylvania when a devastating incident occurred on January 8.
The incident took place shortly after 2 p.m. when the building shook and filled with fear. Emergency crews rushed to the scene as residents and employees tried to escape.
Muthoni and one other resident, whose name has not yet been disclosed, sadly lost their lives in the chaos. Nearly 20 people sustained injuries, and around 120 residents had to evacuate the facility.
Initially, officials believed that three people had died, but later reports confirmed that one victim was resuscitated at the hospital.
Muthoni’s family shared that she was excited for Christmas, planning to cook a traditional Kenyan meal and spend quality time with her loved ones. Her son, Clinton Ndegwa, spoke about her dedication to family, saying she always put them first.
Muthoni moved to the U.S. from Kenya in 2004 and became a licensed practical nurse. She had worked at the nursing home for about a year and was known for her commitment to caring for others.
Friends and coworkers remarked on her strong work ethic and her belief in the importance of education. Clinton recalled, “She always told us that life may not be easy, but it can be better if you work hard for it.”
The family received the heartbreaking news about Muthoni while anxiously waiting at a hospital. Tragically, they were informed that she would not be returning home.
Clinton had even bought her a Coach purse as a Christmas gift, a present she would never get to open.
In addition to her nursing career, Muthoni had recently achieved a lifelong dream of owning a home, a goal she worked tirelessly to accomplish for her children’s future.
Investigators suspect that the incident at the nursing home may have been caused by a gas leak. First responders entered the building despite potential dangers, assisting residents who could not walk or speak.
Some were carried out in wheelchairs, with nearby hospital staff also providing help during the crisis.
Many residents were moved to nearby care facilities, and one person remains in critical condition.
Although authorities reported that the nursing home had passed recent safety inspections, it had previously been cited for other violations. Investigations continue as officials search for answers.
