A fierce rivalry between retired President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua over Mt. Kenya leadership is straining efforts to unify Kenya’s Opposition ahead of the 2027 elections.
The ongoing feud is exposing cracks that analysts warn could weaken Opposition unity against President William Ruto.
Deputy Leader of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), Cleophas Malala, has accused Uhuru-led Jubilee Party of scheming to undermine DCP and erode Gachagua’s influence.
Malala alleged that Jubilee is secretly working with Ruto’s UDA to divide Mt. Kenya, a region where Gachagua has been consolidating his support since leaving government.
“I come from Mt. Kenya; I can speak during the day and return to Kakamega in the evening to eat my ugali. That party (Jubilee) must be warned not to cause divisions if it is truly part of the Opposition coalition,” said Malala.
This came after Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni accused Gachagua of attempting to convince Dr. Fred Matiang’i to form his own party instead of joining Jubilee.
“He is a project of President Ruto and is trying to deceive Kenyans,” Kioni said in a Tuesday interview regarding Gachagua.
But political analyst Prof. Gitile Naituli of Multimedia University cautioned that the war of words between Jubilee and DCP could destroy the Opposition coalition long before the 2027 elections.
He argued that Uhuru’s camp is alarmed by his diminishing influence in Mt. Kenya, hence the loud protests without considering the consequences.
“They want Matiang’i to be backed by Mt. Kenya. They are looking for ways to break the coalition,” said Prof. Naituli.
Prof. Naituli urged Jubilee and DCP to stop finger-pointing and instead push their political agendas, warning that the rift could fracture the Opposition even further at a time when unity is most needed to challenge President Ruto’s UDA.
