The Tiriki Avakove clan has finally broken its silence on growing speculation surrounding the burial rites of the late former Lugari Member of Parliament and businessman, Cyrus Jirongo.
Speaking amid widespread debate online and in public forums, clan spokesman Douglas Beru dismissed claims that Jirongo would be buried with a lit torch, clarifying that no such ritual would take place.
Beru addressed the issue following Jirongo’s sudden death in a road accident in Naivasha on December 13, which has continued to spark questions and cultural interpretations.
Rumours had circulated that the influential politician would undergo a symbolic burial involving a burning torch, a claim that gained traction on social media and talk platforms.
“There is no truth to the claims that Cyrus Jirongo will be buried with a lit torch,” Beru stated. “As a clan, we follow our traditions with dignity and respect, but we also recognise the need to protect the family from unnecessary speculation and misinformation.”
According to the spokesman, the late Jirongo will be accorded a respectful burial in line with Tiriki customs, but without exaggerated or sensationalised rituals being pushed in the public domain.
He urged Kenyans to allow the family to grieve in peace and to separate cultural traditions from conspiracy narratives.
Beru further noted that the family and elders have been closely involved in burial preparations and that all decisions are being made through proper consultation.
“Our customs are not secretive or sinister. They are about honouring the departed and bringing closure to the family,” he said.
The clarification comes as leaders and citizens continue to demand a thorough investigation into Jirongo’s death, with several politicians raising concerns over the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
However, the clan spokesman warned against linking cultural practices to the tragedy.
Cyrus Jirongo, a seasoned politician and businessman, is remembered for his bold political moves and influence across Kenya’s political landscape.
His burial is expected to bring together leaders, family members, and community elders as the nation bids farewell to one of its most controversial yet impactful figures.
