Kioni suggests that UDA intends to strike deals with opposition contenders, encouraging them to withdraw from the race, which would leave UDA-supported candidates without any significant competition.
He views these tactics as a sign that UDA is apprehensive about facing a true contest, implying that the party isn’t confident in its own support among voters.
To combat this situation, Kioni is urging opposition parties to be particularly vigilant during their candidate selection processes, emphasizing the need for candidates of strong ethical standing.
He cautioned that any compromises made in choosing candidates could result in them being “purchased like groundnuts at the market,” illustrating the seriousness of the threat he perceives.
Kioni also expressed concern about potential rifts within the opposition, especially in the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), which he believes could make it easier for President William Ruto to secure a second term.
He specifically warned against selecting a presidential candidate from the Mt. Kenya region, as this could splinter the opposition vote and inadvertently aid Ruto.
In addition, Kioni reaffirmed Jubilee’s support for Fred Matiang’i as their chosen candidate for the 2027 presidential race, highlighting his track record in reform and governance.
