Alai Alleges The Real Person Behind Release Of Njagi & Oyoo After Reports Had Alleged Uhuru

Robert Alai, the Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Kileleshwa, has introduced a dramatic new twist to the story of two freed Kenyan activists, alleging that President William Ruto was the true architect behind their release from Uganda, not former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The MCA made the stunning allegation on his social media platforms, directly challenging the prevailing narrative. He claimed, "Until President William Ruto called President Kaguta Museveni then socialites claimed that it's Uhuru."

In his statement, Alai dismisses the widespread reports crediting the former president as mere gossip from "socialites," while attributing the successful outcome to a direct, high-level call between the two current heads of state.

This new claim directly contradicts multiple earlier reports, which had been widely circulated by media outlets and even acknowledged by human rights organisations.

These initial reports had credited former President Uhuru Kenyatta with making the decisive intervention after 38 days of stalled negotiations.

Groups like Amnesty International Kenya had specifically thanked the "immediate former President" for his cooperation in ensuring the activists' safe return to the country.

The controversy is centred on the release of activists Bob Njagi and Nicholas Oyoo, who were freed on the night of November 7, 2025.

The two men had endured a harrowing ordeal after being abducted in Kampala and held incommunicado, during which they allege they were subjected to torture by Ugandan security forces. Their freedom was a major victory for their families and advocacy groups.

MCA Robert Alai’s new assertion has now injected a significant political dimension into the event.

Shifting the credit from the former president to the current one, he has effectively transformed a human rights success story into a contentious debate over which administration, Ruto's or Kenyatta's, can claim the diplomatic victory.
