Oburu Oginga Addresses Claims of Plans to Expel Edwin Sifuna Out of ODM Days After Raila’s Passing

Nairobi — Siaya senator and acting ODM party leader Oburu Oginga has assured Kenyans that Edwin Sifuna will remain the party’s secretary general despite rising pressure from a few members calling for his expulsion.

Speaking during a live interview on Ramogi TV on Tuesday, October 28, Oburu dismissed talk that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) was planning to remove Sifuna because of his strong views on the current political situation.

He said the party was still united and focused on its transition after the death of its long-time leader, Raila Odinga.

Oburu explained that Sifuna had already confirmed his willingness to cooperate with the new leadership and to help keep ODM strong.

“Sifuna read the resolutions of our last meeting, and I spoke with him personally. He has no problem with my leadership. He’s part of the team,” Oburu said.

He also cautioned ODM members against spreading false claims about divisions within the movement.

“As a young man, Sifuna may sometimes speak passionately, but that doesn’t mean he has rebelled. If he crosses a line, we’ll handle it as a family matter, not through public fights,” he added.

The Siaya senator emphasized that disagreements were normal in any political party but insisted they would not allow internal conflicts to break ODM’s unity.

“ODM will stay strong because we understand our history and our shared goals,” he stated.

His remarks come after Nandi senator Samson Cherargei, a close ally of President William Ruto, called for Sifuna’s removal, accusing him of opposing the government’s broad-based approach.

However, Oburu dismissed Cherargei’s comments as outside interference meant to weaken the opposition.

ODM youth leader Kasmuel McOure had also challenged Sifuna to resign if he no longer believed in the party’s ideals.

But Oburu made it clear that Sifuna’s loyalty was not in question.

“He’s with us. He has done nothing wrong to deserve punishment,” he said firmly.

Oburu concluded by saying the party’s focus was on rebuilding its structures, mentoring young leaders, and preparing for the next general election.

“Our strength lies in unity. That’s what Baba taught us, and that’s what we will continue to uphold,” he said.
