"Murkomen Was Just Running Like A Headless Chicken" UDA Senator On What Happened After Raila's Death

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei on Tuesday sparked heated debate in the Senate after he accused top security officials of failing to maintain order during the state burial of the late opposition leader Raila Odinga.

Speaking during the afternoon session, Cherargei directly criticized Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and senior security chiefs, claiming they mishandled the event and failed to coordinate effectively.

The senator said the disorganization witnessed during the burial was a result of what he termed as “a total breakdown in leadership within the security ranks.”

“Instead of ensuring adequate security during Raila’s state burial, the security officials led by CS Murkomen were running like headless chickens around the venue,” Cherargei said.

“Their confusion and lack of proper planning led to unnecessary disorder that unfortunately caused the deaths of innocent Kenyans.”

The outspoken senator demanded a comprehensive report from the Ministry of Interior, detailing what went wrong and who should take responsibility for the chaos that marred the historic event.

He further urged the Senate to summon the Interior CS and the Inspector General of Police to explain the lapses in security management.

Cherargei’s remarks drew sharp reactions from some senators who accused him of politicizing a sensitive matter, while others supported his call for accountability, saying the government must ensure safety during national events.

The burial of the late Raila Odinga, which drew thousands of mourners from across the country and abroad, turned chaotic as sections of the crowd clashed with security officers, leading to injuries and reported fatalities.

The Senate is expected to deliberate on the matter further as questions continue to emerge over the government’s preparedness and coordination during major national ceremonies.
