The main suspect is their farmhand, who had only worked for the couple for about two months.
Pius Machogu, 72, and his wife, Jerusha Kwamboka, 70, both active members of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, attended their usual Saturday service on September 13 before returning home.
Neighbors said the couple seemed healthy and cheerful at church, but tragedy struck later that night.
According to Jared Bosire, a church elder, neighbors grew suspicious on Sunday after failing to reach the couple by phone.
“They tried calling and knocking on the door, but no one answered. When they could not reach them, they informed the children living in Nairobi,” Bosire said.
When they went to check on the couple, the farmhand reportedly claimed that the elderly pair were asleep and refused to provide more information.
The villagers became increasingly worried, prompting them to scale the compound walls to investigate.
Police officers arrived and instructed the farmhand to lead them to the couple’s room. Instead, they only found their phones.
During questioning, the farmhand allegedly gave conflicting statements, claiming the couple had gone on a journey.
The situation escalated when the villagers began searching the compound, opening a locked well where they discovered the woman’s body floating.
The man was also found dead, showing signs of apparent injuries inflicted before his death. Another neighbor, Rael Kirui, said the farmhand’s actions left everyone baffled.
“He had only worked here for two months, and no one knows what prompted him to commit this crime,” she said.
Authorities are still investigating the whereabouts of the household maid, who remains unaccounted for.
The couple’s bodies were taken to Elburgon Sub-County Hospital mortuary as investigations continue.
