“Nani Amemchagua?” Cracks Emerge In Opposition as Natembeya Rejects Gachagua’s Presidential Claim, Warns Him Against Self-Declaration as Flagbearer

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has fired back at former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua after the latter claimed he would be the United Opposition’s flagbearer for the 2027 General Elections.

Speaking on Radio Citizen on Monday, September 15, 2025, Natembeya dismissed Gachagua’s assertions, calling them “premature” and stressing that no one should declare themselves as the opposition’s candidate.

Natembeya explained that the process of selecting a presidential flagbearer within the opposition would be thorough.

“We must agree as a team, and no one should beat their chest claiming the position,” he said.

He added that the selection would depend on two main factors: the number of supporters a candidate can mobilize and the resources they can bring to the table.

The Governor emphasized that the opposition’s immediate focus remains on uniting against President William Ruto’s policies, which he argued have failed to alleviate poverty and fulfill campaign promises.

“Our aim is to hold the President accountable and work toward positive change for Kenyans,” Natembeya stated.

The comments come shortly after Gachagua, during a church service on Sunday, September 14, declared his intention to contest for the presidency.

He insisted that doubts over his impeachment would not disqualify him and promised that, if elected, he would prioritize improving healthcare, housing, and education.

“Why does Rigathi Gachagua want to be President? If Kenyans elect me, my first mission will be to restore our health system, ensuring hospitals have medicine and better services,” Gachagua said.

He further stated, “I am qualified, I have support, and I am determined to be on the ballot for President.”
