Jubilee, led by former President Uhuru Kenyatta, confirmed through Deputy Organising Secretary Pauline Njoroge that the party will not front its own candidate. Instead, it will rally behind the joint opposition aspirant.
Njoroge dismissed claims that Jubilee’s National Executive Council had handed nomination papers to an unknown hopeful, clarifying that such reports were misleading.
Rigathi Gachagua, leader of DCP, had already revealed his party would not participate directly in Mbeere North.
Instead, he declared support for Newton Karish of the Democratic Party (DP).
According to him, the choice was meant to strengthen unity within the opposition and recognize DP’s historical presence in the constituency.
The decision followed a high-level NEC meeting where DCP resolved to withdraw from three by-elections.
Apart from Mbeere North, the party will support Wiper in Muumbuni Ward and DAP-K in Kabuchai/Chwele Ward.
Gachagua explained that the move was designed to set the stage for a more united opposition ahead of the 2027 General Elections.
However, not everyone welcomed the strategy. Duncan Mbui, who was expected to contest on a DCP ticket, abandoned the party and shifted allegiance to Moses Kuria’s Chama cha Kazi.
Mbui argued that the withdrawal left him with no choice but to seek another platform.
On the other hand, President William Ruto’s UDA has fielded Leonard Muriuki, while Mbui will run on a Chama cha Kazi ticket.
This three-way battle is expected to test the strength of emerging alliances as well as the popularity of UDA in the region.
Analysts suggest that the cooperation between Kenyatta’s Jubilee and Gachagua’s DCP is a sign of wider opposition realignment.
For many, it marks an unexpected development given the strained relations between the two leaders in the past.
