Police Shoots 14-Year-Old Boy In Leg Multiple Times, Leaves Grade 9 Pupil Admitted At KNH in Limuru During Saba Saba Protests

A 14-year-old boy is nursing serious injuries after being shot by police officers during the Saba Saba protests in Tigoni, Limuru.

Solomon Njoroge, a Grade 9 pupil, was playing football with friends when unknown individuals in a white car arrived and opened fire.

He was shot three times in his right leg and once in his left heel, leaving him wheelchair-bound and awaiting surgery at Kenyatta National Hospital.

Speaking from his hospital bed, Solomon recounted the terrifying ordeal: “I was just playing football when a white car pulled up.

They started shooting. One boy fell, then I was shot. After I collapsed, they took my phone, frisked me, and called for backup. A police truck came and took us away.”

According to his father, Kibe Mungai, a hawker in Limuru, his efforts to secure timely medical treatment for his son were frustrated by police officers who reportedly detained the injured boy in a cell for two days after the shooting.

“They kept taking me in circles, refusing to give me clear answers or let me see my son,” Mungai said.

Njoroge was initially taken to Tigoni Hospital where he received a tetanus injection and intravenous fluids. However, he was then transferred to a holding cell instead of receiving specialized treatment for his gunshot wounds.

The incident has sparked outrage among human rights groups and members of the public, who are demanding justice and accountability from the police.

Activists have accused the government of deploying excessive force on peaceful demonstrators, many of whom were minors.

In a related statement, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna criticized President William Ruto for allegedly instructing police to "shoot protesters in the leg."

“This is unacceptable. We cannot tolerate state-sponsored violence against our children,” he said.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has since launched an investigation into the incident, promising a thorough probe into the conduct of officers involved.

The shooting comes at a politically tense time in Kenya as the country gears up for the 2027 General Election.

Widespread protests have rocked several counties, including Nairobi, Kisumu, and Mombasa, as citizens voice frustrations over governance, economic hardships, and police brutality.
