President William Ruto on Sunday, April 12, received a warm reception at Gusii Stadium on his first day of touring the Gusii region.
After Ruto's arrival, hundreds of locals who were seated in the stadium left their positions and ran towards him in excitement.
In response, police officers quickly moved to block them from reaching the Head of State.
However, South Mugirango MP Sylvanus Osoro intervened and directed the officers to stop, allowing the crowd to freely interact with the president as he addressed them.
President Ruto is set to tour Kisii County and Nyamira County during his four-day visit, which is expected to focus on development projects as well as strengthening his political influence in the region.
The reception at Gusii Stadium is seen as a show of the president’s growing support in the region, with local leaders expected to use the tour to rally residents behind the government’s agenda ahead of future political contests.
While State House has framed the trip as a development tour focused on inspecting ongoing projects and launching new initiatives, it carries significant political weight.
The visit is widely seen as a strategic move to consolidate support in the Gusii region ahead of the 2027 general election.
The region, historically a stronghold of opposition politics under the late Raila Odinga, is currently experiencing a political shift following his death on October 15 last year.
