Alai’s Kisumu Warning Sparks Nationwide Backlash as Kenyans Rally Behind Sifuna

A political storm has erupted across the country after Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai made controversial remarks perceived to target Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna ahead of his anticipated visit to Kisumu.

In a widely circulated social media post, Alai appeared to caution Sifuna against travelling to Kisumu without first issuing an apology to Oburu Oginga.

He claimed that a section of residents in the region were unhappy with Sifuna’s recent political positions, sparking immediate backlash from Kenyans across the political divide.

The remarks were shared alongside plans by the Linda Mwananchi team to tour Kisumu on April 26, in what they described as a mission to appreciate locals for exposing individuals allegedly linked to the attack on Godfrey Osotsi.

However, instead of rallying support, the message ignited sharp criticism, with many interpreting it as an attempt to restrict Sifuna’s movement based on political differences.

Legal experts and political analysts were quick to point out that such sentiments run contrary to Article 39 of the Constitution, which guarantees every Kenyan the right to move freely and reside in any part of the country.

They warned that statements implying territorial control or political “clearance” could fuel unnecessary tensions and undermine democratic values.

Sifuna, who also serves as Secretary-General of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), has in recent weeks taken positions that appear critical of certain elements within the party. Despite this, observers insist that internal disagreements should not be used to justify hostility or exclusion.

Online, Kenyans reacted swiftly and strongly, with many condemning Alai’s remarks as reckless and divisive.

A section of social media users termed the comments as dangerous, arguing that leaders must promote unity rather than deepen divisions, especially in a politically sensitive environment.

Others emphasized that any perceived threats—whether direct or implied—towards political leaders should be treated with seriousness and investigated thoroughly to ensure safety and accountability.

The controversy has also raised concerns about intolerance within political parties, particularly when dissenting voices emerge.

Analysts warn that if such rhetoric goes unchecked, it could set a troubling precedent where political disagreements evolve into regional or personal confrontations.
