Rigathi Gachagua, the leader of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), has given the strongest indication yet that Kalonzo Musyoka might win the presidency of the United Opposition in the 2027 General Election.
This suggests that support for the Wiper leader is building within the coalition. Speaking at recent political events in Makueni County, Gachagua implied that the opposition was growing more supportive of Kalonzo as a potential single contender to run against President William Ruto in the upcoming presidential election.
His comments have stoked rumors that, in advance of the crucial election, the United Opposition is discreetly choosing a consensus candidate.
Opposition has not yet formally announced its presidential candidate, despite the mounting indications.
In order to maintain unity and improve their prospects of overthrowing the current government, coalition officials had previously stated that the decision will be decided following internal deliberations among partner parties.
After years of playing important roles in coalition politics, including serving as Kenya's vice president from 2008 to 2013, Kalonzo's candidacy, if confirmed, would represent another significant attempt by the seasoned politician to win the presidency.
