A family in the Kangari area of the Kigumo Constituency in Muranga County is mourning after a tragic incident in which a 25-year-old woman killed her young daughter before ending her own life, leaving the community shaken and searching for answers.
The woman identified as Jane Nyambura had spent the December holiday season at her parents' home, where she reportedly appeared cheerful and socially engaged with relatives and neighbours.
On the eve of the New Year, she remained at her rental house with her child as her mother, Esther Njeri, went about her daily trading activities at Kangari market.
At around 6.30 in the evening, Njeri received an urgent phone call from a neighbour asking her to return home immediately.
Upon arrival she was confronted with a devastating scene where Nyambura was found hanging from the ceiling while the child lay dead with visible stab wounds.
Earlier in the day Nyambura had been at home with her younger brother, who is in Grade Nine.
He noticed her holding a rope and questioned her intentions in a light manner.
She sent him away with money to buy shoes from the market.
When the boy returned later, he found the door locked with the keys hanging outside.
After entering and seeing what had happened, he ran to alert neighbours.
Friends and family described Nyambura as jovial and social despite being unemployed after graduating with a finance degree in 2024.
The tragedy has sparked renewed concern over youth unemployment and mental wellbeing.
Relatives and neighbours have continued to gather at the homestead to offer support as appeals are made for assistance to help the family organise burial arrangements and cope with the loss.
