Why Lawyer Ndegwa Njiru Says He Supports Kalonzo Musyoka—Not Rigathi Gachagua—in the Opposition

Popular United Opposition lawyer Ndegwa Njiru has explained why he backs Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka instead of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, despite previously representing Gachagua during his impeachment trial.

Speaking during a Monday night interview on Obina TV, Ndegwa made it clear that his political loyalty is not tied to the former DP or his new party, the Democratic Congress Party (DCP).

Instead, he said his allegiance lies with the broader Opposition movement and the values it stands for.

“I don’t support Riggy G. I support the Opposition,” he said.

“The United Opposition is not about an individual. And by the way, I am not even a member of DCP—I belong to the Wiper Patriotic Front.”

Why He Prefers Kalonzo Musyoka

According to Ndegwa, his long-term political home is the Wiper Party, and his support for Kalonzo Musyoka is rooted in the belief that Kalonzo aligns more closely with the principles he cares about.

The lawyer listed the values he believes should guide the Opposition’s 2027 presidential candidate, including:

respect for the rule of law

constitutionalism

democracy

strong institutions

human rights

accountability

equity and social justice

Ndegwa said that Kalonzo embodies these ideals and has the character required to lead the country.

Even so, he stressed that he would support any presidential candidate chosen by the United Opposition, including Gachagua, if the coalition settles on him.

“I will vote for any person the United Opposition fronts, as long as that person adheres to our ideals,” he said.

Before Gachagua’s impeachment motion was filed by MP Mwingi Mutuse, Ndegwa was one of the former DP’s harshest critics.

He frequently used his social media platforms to oppose Gachagua’s leadership style when he was still serving in government.

However, during the impeachment process, Ndegwa surprised many when he joined Gachagua’s legal team and defended him in the Senate.

Since then, the two have appeared together at various Opposition events, raising speculation that Ndegwa had shifted camps.

But according to him, political cooperation should not be confused with political loyalty.

His support remains with Kalonzo and the Wiper Party, not Gachagua’s DCP—even though they are working together in the broader Opposition alliance.

During the same interview, Ndegwa delivered a direct message to President William Ruto, calling on him to step down.

“Mr. William Ruto, my name is Ndegwa Njiru. I come from Kirinyaga. If you could do Kenyans a favour and resign and go home, you would have done this country a great service,” he said.

Ndegwa argued that Kenya needs a leadership change in 2027, insisting that Kalonzo Musyoka is better suited to take over the presidency.
