Siaya Governor James Orengo has strongly criticised President William Ruto’s government, saying that both the Luo and Luhya communities are not part of the ruling administration and should not be misled by small political rewards.
Speaking during a public event in Kakamega County on Thursday, Orengo addressed National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula directly as he delivered his message.
He told the gathering that despite supporting different leaders over the years, the two communities continue to remain outside the centre of power.
“Luos and Luhyas are not in government,” Orengo said. “We should not be bought by cheap things. Our people deserve respect, fairness and proper representation.”
The Siaya governor urged the Luhya community to take time and plan their political future carefully ahead of the 2027 General Election.
He asked them to organise themselves and work towards removing President Ruto from power, arguing that the current leadership has failed to improve the lives of ordinary citizens.
Orengo said Kenyans are struggling with the high cost of living, heavy taxation and lack of job opportunities, issues he blamed on poor leadership.
He added that development and government benefits should reach all regions equally, not just areas that support the ruling side.
Addressing Speaker Wetang’ula, Orengo said leaders should stand with their people and speak the truth, even when holding powerful positions. He noted that leadership is about defending the interests of citizens, not personal gain.
His remarks drew reactions from the crowd and are expected to spark debate across Western Kenya and Nyanza regions.
The Luhya vote bloc remains one of the largest in the country and is seen as key in shaping the 2027 presidential race.
Orengo’s comments point to growing political mobilisation among opposition leaders as they seek to build alliances and challenge President Ruto’s leadership ahead of the next election.
