Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has emerged as President William Ruto’s closest potential challenger in the 2027 general election, according to a recent opinion poll conducted by Infotrak.
The end-year poll, released on Sunday, December 28, indicates that although President Ruto continues to enjoy a strong lead, Matiang’i is the only opposition figure currently showing signs of mounting a serious challenge.
According to the survey, which was conducted between December 19 and December 20, President Ruto would win the election if it were held today, securing 28 per cent of the vote.
Matiang’i followed at a distant but notable second with 13 per cent support, placing him ahead of other potential contenders.
The findings have reignited debate within opposition circles over who should carry the united opposition ticket in 2027.
Matiang’i’s performance in the poll raises questions about whether opposition leaders would rally behind him as their preferred candidate to face Ruto.
While the poll suggests that Ruto still maintains a comfortable advantage, analysts note that the relatively early timing—more than two years before the election—means voter preferences could shift significantly.
Political alignments, coalition-building, and national issues are expected to play a major role in shaping the final race.
Infotrak’s results highlight the early contours of the 2027 contest, suggesting that while President Ruto remains the frontrunner, Fred Matiang’i is emerging as a key figure to watch as Kenya’s political landscape continues to evolve.
