A tragic accident on the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway claimed the lives of several people and left three others seriously injured on Sunday, December 7.
The incident occurred in the Masenyi area, near Voi, when a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) collided head-on with a trailer.
Eyewitnesses said the PSV was traveling to Mombasa, while the trailer was coming from the opposite direction.
The front of the PSV was completely destroyed in the crash, while the trailer sustained minor damage. Both vehicles eventually went off the road, leaving chaos at the scene.
Emergency responders, including police and local motorists, rushed to the site to rescue survivors and clear the wreckage.
Preliminary reports suggest that the driver of the PSV may have lost control after a tyre burst, although investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the accident.
The Motorists Association of Kenya (MAK) criticized the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) for failing to upgrade the busy highway into a dual carriageway.
They suggested that proper road planning and infrastructure improvements could prevent such accidents in the future.
Among the victims were a woman and two men who died on the spot.
The three injured survivors were immediately taken to the nearest hospital for treatment. Local authorities have begun a formal inquiry to determine the factors that led to the collision.
This accident follows another deadly crash on Friday, December 5, in Busia County.
A PSV vehicle overturned in the Wakhungu area of Funyula constituency, killing four people.
Officials reported that a tyre burst caused the driver to lose control, highlighting a worrying trend of vehicle-related accidents on Kenyan highways.
Road safety experts say that regular vehicle maintenance, cautious driving, and infrastructure upgrades are critical to preventing such tragedies.
Motorists are urged to drive responsibly, observe speed limits, and report road hazards to authorities promptly.
The Mombasa Road crash has once again sparked concerns about safety on Kenya’s major highways. Families of the victims are mourning, while survivors receive urgent medical care.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident and have called on drivers to prioritize safety to reduce accidents and save lives.
