Police in Migori are holding three suspects as investigations deepen into the death of a Kenya Defence Forces officer found dead at her home on Christmas Eve.
The case has drawn wide attention after detectives recovered a suspected murder weapon from a shop in town.
The deceased, Lieutenant Cynthia Awuor Mboya, was a 28-year-old officer based at Gilgil Barracks.
She had travelled home to Nyahera Village in Suna East to spend the festive season with her husband.
She was expected to return to duty days later but never did.
Her husband, together with his mother and brother, was arrested by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to help establish what happened.
Police say several items were recovered from the house, including clothes believed to have been worn during the incident.
Security officers responded to a distress call from the husband in the early hours of Christmas Eve and found the officer lying in her bedroom.
Initial checks showed injuries that raised suspicion of foul play.
Suna East Police Commander Samuel Boit said the matter was first reported to local authorities before police moved in.
He explained that the assistant chief had received information from the husband, who reported that upon returning home from Migori town, he found the house doors wide open and his wife lying in a pool of blood, after which he raised the alarm.
He added that the husband is being treated as a key suspect.
Mr Boit said the man was assisting the police with investigations and that his detention was meant to help officers gather more information surrounding the case.
Detectives later searched the husband’s shop at Cool Plaza in Migori town, where they recovered a panga bearing red stains, which has been taken for forensic analysis. Investigations into the killing continue.
