‘He Was a Fighter in Every Sense’ — Ruto Mourns Former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo

President William Ruto has led the nation in mourning former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo, who died early Saturday morning following a tragic road accident along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway.

In a heartfelt message released on December 13, President Ruto described Jirongo as a close friend, a fearless politician, and a determined businessman who lived life on his own terms. 

The Head of State said Jirongo’s death was a major loss not only to his family but also to Kenya’s political and business communities.

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of my friend, former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo,” Ruto said. 

“He was a relentless go-getter, a seasoned businessman, and a consummate politician who refused to be defined or defeated by the challenges of life.”

Ruto praised Jirongo as a man of courage and conviction, noting that he never shied away from difficult decisions or bold ideas. 

According to the President, Jirongo stood out because of his rare mix of toughness and warmth, qualities that earned him respect across the political divide.

“He was a fighter in every sense,” Ruto added. 

“Blunt yet warm, bold yet approachable, enlightened and endlessly entrepreneurial. Above all, he was generous, always willing to uplift others and support people with his time, resources, and belief.”

The President said Jirongo’s legacy would be remembered for years, especially by those he mentored and supported throughout his long career. 

He extended his condolences to the family and friends of the late politician, asking Kenyans to keep them in their prayers during the difficult period.

Cyrus Jirongo, aged 64, lost his life at around 3:00 a.m. after his vehicle was involved in a head-on collision with a Climax Coaches bus at the Karai area in Naivasha. 

Police reports indicate that he was alone in the car and was travelling towards Nairobi at the time of the accident. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash are still ongoing.

Jirongo was a well-known political figure, especially in Western Kenya. He rose to national prominence in the 1990s and later served as a Cabinet minister during the presidency of the late Daniel arap Moi. 

He also represented Lugari Constituency in Parliament for two terms, where he became known for his outspoken style and firm political positions.

Following news of his death, several leaders across the country paid tribute to him. National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula described Jirongo as a trailblazer who left a lasting mark on Kenya’s political history, especially as a youth leader in the 1990s.

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna said he was shocked by the sudden loss, sending condolences to the family and praying for comfort during the time of mourning. 

Former Attorney General Justin Muturi also expressed sympathy on behalf of his family and political party, saying Jirongo’s legacy would continue to inspire many.
