Why Uhuru Didn’t Endorse Matiang’i as Jubilee’s 2027 Presidential Candidate During NDC

Kitutu Chache South MP Anthony Kibagendi has revealed why former President Uhuru Kenyatta chose not to endorse former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i as Jubilee’s presidential flag bearer during the National Delegates Conference (NDC) in September.

Speaking on Friday, October 24, Kibagendi said Uhuru’s decision was guided by party procedure, not personal reservations about Matiang’i’s leadership.

He explained that the endorsement was never part of the official NDC agenda circulated ahead of the meeting, making it legally impossible to table or vote on.

“Jubilee operates under a constitution and clear regulations,” Kibagendi said.

“You cannot introduce a new agenda midstream. The endorsement of a presidential candidate will only happen during the next NDC, where that issue will be properly listed.”

He noted that attempting to endorse Matiang’i during the September conference would have opened the party to legal challenges and internal disputes.

According to Kibagendi, the next delegates’ meeting will be the official platform to unveil and endorse the party’s 2027 presidential candidate.

The legislator also assured that Matiang’i remains an active and loyal member of the Jubilee Party and the broader United Opposition coalition.

He described the former CS as deeply engaged in uniting opposition forces and shaping strategies for the next general election.

Kibagendi dismissed claims that Matiang’i has distanced himself from politics, insisting that he continues to play a vital behind-the-scenes role in the coalition’s push for a united front.

He hinted that Jubilee’s upcoming convention could finally settle the question of its presidential candidate, with Matiang’i expected to be among the leading contenders.
