ODM Succession Battle Heats Up as Sifuna Unveils New Political Outfit “Kenya Moja”

The death of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, the party's long-time torchbearer, has sparked a raging political storm in the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). 

Raila commanded unwavering allegiance across Luo Nyanza and beyond for decades, but his death has sparked a race to inherit his political mantle.

According to The Star, six prominent personalities have emerged as probable successors to Raila's throne: Dr. Oburu Odinga, Siaya Governor James Orengo, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo, CS Opiyo Wandayi, and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga.

The ODM National Executive Committee's decision to nominate Dr. Oburu as acting party leader has sparked both hope and tension, with supporters hailing his experience and critics claiming that the party requires a new face to attract the next generation. 

CS Wandayi praised the move, calling Dr. Oburu as a "steady hand" capable of guiding ODM through the transition.

He asked the party to hold a National Delegates Convention to confirm the appointment and honour Raila's legacy of unity and change. However, underlying the public's demands for calm, a subtle resistance is emerging.

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, ODM's outspoken secretary general, has apparently founded a new political party called "Kenya Moja," pitching it as a modern, youth-driven alternative to ODM.

According to sources close to Sifuna, the organisation aims to "redefine opposition politics" and move away from personality cults that have long dominated Kenya's political scene.

With ODM torn between loyalty to Raila's history and a desire for generational change, Kenya's opposition is facing one of its most explosive and defining periods yet, a war not only for leadership but also for the movement's spirit.
