The legislator dismissed claims that the image reflects his current lifestyle, explaining that it was taken several years ago before he abandoned alcohol.
In a statement, Owino clarified that the controversial photo was captured in 2018.
He emphasized that he has been sober for over five years, adding that his last encounter with alcohol was on January 17, 2020.
“Let me clarify this for the record. The last time I drunk alcohol was on the 17th of January 2020.
The photo in question was taken in 2018. I have been sober for the past five years,” the MP said.
According to Owino, giving up alcohol was a deliberate choice that allowed him to refocus his energy on personal growth and public service.
He said the discipline he applied in transforming his life is the same commitment he intends to use in serving the people of Nairobi and Kenyans at large.
“I will transform the lives of Nairobians and Kenyans the way I transformed my life,” he added.
The MP noted that while social media can sometimes be used to discredit leaders, it also provides an opportunity to clarify misinformation and highlight positive change.
For him, the resurfacing of the photo presented a moment to remind the public of his journey to sobriety and responsibility.
Babu Owino has often been at the center of public debate, but he insisted that his current focus remains on leadership and championing issues affecting young people, including education, employment, and the fight against drug abuse.
By stressing his own experience, he said he hopes to inspire others struggling with similar challenges to believe in second chances.
The clarification comes as politicians increasingly find themselves under scrutiny from old images and viral content.
